– Tutorial Workshop (short courses) for Newcomers, on Monday;
– Focused Session on 3D-printing with geopolymer binders, on Tuesday afternoon.

Every year, we invite you to join the Geopolymer Institute for the largest, most comprehensive international conference devoted to Geopolymer technologies, the 8th GeopolymerCamp 2016, at the University of Picardie, Campus of Saint-Quentin, North of Paris, France, on July 4-6, 2016.

Please, take a look at the GEOPOLYMER CAMP 2016 web page to register:
Geopolymer-Camp-2016-Registration (click on the link)
(or in French at Geopolymer-Camp-2016-Inscription )

Last year, we had a big Geopolymer Camp. We introduced a special workshop for newcomers by which they learned how to work with geopolymers, with formulas and suppliers’ names. 2/3 of the participants were professionals from the industry and business pioneers, 1/3 were academics. This event is now the best to create your network.

We have opened the registration by now in February and early birds have already signed up.

We have a limited number of seats (fewer than 90), so I strongly suggest you do not wait too long to join us. Chances are that, by the end of May, there will be few seats left.

We want to keep this event small in size but big in quality (good knowledge shared and interesting people to meet), as most of you already know, in order to emulate sharing, discussions, meetings, so every participant shall have a satisfying event.

As always, we keep the registration fees to a minimum of 55 Euro (approx. 60 US $) for advance payment, just to cover the costs for organization, lunches, coffee and the like, etc.

FOR NEWCOMERS: If you are new to the world of geopolymers and you don’t know how to begin, what raw materials to select, how to manufacture geopolymers, what are the good practices, and looking for a good understanding of this chemistry, the Geopolymer Institute organizes a Tutorial / Workshop (a short course) for beginners at a very low cost on the first day, Monday, July 4th, which takes place before the beginning of the Geopolymer Camp. You will learn the best knowledge to work immediately and receive two authentic geopolymer formula (one ceramic binder, and one room temperature hardening cement) with the procedure explained step by step, with all the references to their raw materials and the names of their suppliers ! After this workshop, you will be ready to start.

Note that depending on the number of people signing up, we may organize a second session on Thursday, July 7th.

Tutorial fees: 360 Euro (approx. 390 US $) for advanced payment. See the program at the Geopolymer Camp web page:
Geopolymer-Camp-2016-Registration (click on the link)

I am inviting you to participate and to share the spirit of these events and hope to see you in Saint-Quentin for the 8th GeopolymerCamp 2016, with Tutorial for Newcomers.

Program: (see the detailed program)
The 5th GP Camp 2013 will present the traditional Keynote “State of Geopolymer R&D 2013“, several small communications (20 to 30) from the participants, and two special featured Sessions with Keynotes dedicated to:
– Organic-mineral geopolymers
– Ancient technologies (latest analysis of the pyramid stones).

Registrations are running well and we are confident that this fifth Geopolymer Camp will be a success. You’ll have 3 days (8-9-10 July) for learning, presenting, sharing, chatting, at super saver-cost. As you know, we have decided to break down the infernal spiral of costs that is undermining the exchanges between the scientific communities. Conferences with registration fees of 1000 dollars (700 euros) are non-sense.

Mark your calendars and plan on being in Saint-Quentin, France, on Tuesday 5.- Wednesday 6. July 2011 for the third GeopolymerCamp (registration on Monday 4. afternoon).

Why?

To get geopolymer fans together, learn from each other, figure out the future of geopolymer applications and chemistry, and have a good time. You’ll have 2 days for learning, presenting, sharing, chatting, at super saver-cost of 50 euros. We have decided to break down the infernal spiral of costs that is undermining the exchanges between the scientific communities. Conferences with registration fees of 800-1000 dollars (600-700 euros) are non-sense. Apparently this is what some scientists are ready to pay because of the infamous publish or perish request from their administration. We want to change this trend into learn OR perish. It is now so easy to make a publication in a regular journal, because there are so many, that it becomes no longer accurate to spend these enormous fees just to see his conference presentation on a simple CD (Proceedings), not on paper.

Let start a new era, return to what it was, 50 years ago, when conferences and gatherings were affordable. COME TO THE GEOPOLYMER CAMP.

On January 14th, 2007, we celebrate the 11th anniversary of the Geopolymer Institute Website. It is the first time we share this event with you, dear visitors. You are reading the first source of geopolymer science and we thank you for making it a success.

We would like to share with you a piece of the website’s little story. You see, in the picture below, a copy of 4 home pages, illustrating the 4 versions in which the website evolved. And still from the beginning, the website is developed, coded, designed and maintained by Ralph Davidovits.

The first version was officially launched on January 14th, 1996 at the ICCI’96 congress in Tucson, USA, during a presentation of Prof. Joseph Davidovits. It was hosted at our local university (INSSET, part of the university of Picardie, in France) on an Apple PowerMac 6100 and a 64kb internet line. There were around 25 pages, and already 11 papers free to download in the library. During the first year, we get around 10 to 15 visitors per day, but we expected this audience in one month! From this moment on, we really measures the true demand on geopolymers, and the necessity to develop something better for the community.

The second version was released a year after. We asked a friend to do some design works in order to offer a more attractive website. We got a new logo for the Geopolymer Institute and a new layout. In one year, 1500 papers were downloaded from the library. In addition, it was acclaimed as one of the best scientific website in the world by different sources! In 1998, the local university got a 128kb internet line and hosted our website on a Linux server.

The third version was launched in year 2000, with a professional hosting company and a real domain name (geopolymer.org). We used all the technology of that time, and was managed in a more professional way, with 270 pages, 30000 visitors per year, and we translated some part in French. Until then, everything was in English.

The fourth and last version was released on march 2006, and is using the cutting edge internet technology in a dynamic website, and sporting a new logo for the Geopolymer Institute. It took 3 months to develop it. You can subscribe to its RSS feed and even read it on you mobile phone or PDA! Our new website is ready to hold 1000 visitors a day (it happened in early December 2006), bigger downloads of bigger files and also videos, yet 130000 files have been downloaded from the library.
We hope to keep this one for the next 5 years.

Did you notice? This website is really free, no ads, no cookies, no proprietary files, because we care of your privacy, the ease of use, the access to all users (not a majority), even impaired ones, thanks to our respects to open standards and free softwares.

And again, thank you for your support and your enthusiasm in the geopolymer science!

In memoriam
It is with sorrow that I learned that my friend Georges Grimal died at the age of 98 years. The majority of our scientific colleagues, engineers and students, know at least one of his works of Art created with geopolymer. It is displayed on this site at the page Potential utilizations in Art and Decoration

I met with Georges Grimal in 1981. Major General of the French Air Force, he had always been interested by new developments related to aeronautic, but at the same time he cultivated his gifts as a painter and sculptor. We had just manufactured prototypes in geopolymer for the French company Marcel Dassault (the bomber Mirage 2000), when George Grimal discovered the properties of our revolutionary material. He immediately thought of employing it for his sculptures and bas-reliefs. He was very gifted for the pastel painting and his outlines out of clay revealed the same subtleties as his paintings. He learned how to make silicone moulds, then objects in geopolymer. Very soon, we created a one meter high statue, called: Europa, followed by splendid woman heads and busts, before focusing on his major work, the Dramatized Sculpture. He took an active part in our Geopolymer Conferences: 1988, 1999 and deeply regretted not to be able to attend GEOPOLYMER 2005. His concept was successfully presented at Geopolymer ‘99, and his contributions are published in the Proceedings of Geopolymer ‘88 and Geopolymer ‘99. I have decided to put in our Library for free download, therefore accessible to all, his Geopolymer ‘99 conference, entitled Dramatized Sculptures with Geopolymers

As a tribute to Prof. Dr. Joseph Davidovits’ 70th birthday in 2005, and the 25th anniversary of the first geopolymer patents, (Na-K)-PSS types, we decided to organize the GEOPOLYMER 2005 WORLD CONGRESS. It gathers two major events in two different locations:
1) Fourth International Conference
Saint-Quentin (North of Paris), France, June 29, 30, and July 1, 2005
2) International Workshop on Geopolymer Cements and Concrete
Perth, Australia, September 28-29, 2005

80 conferences were presented with more than 180 attendants from 30 countries around the World.

The main topic of the conference was Geopolymer-chemistry and sustainable Development. The Poly(sialate)terminology, a very useful and simple model for the promotion and understanding of green-chemistry.

The last few years have seen spectacular technological progress in the development of Geosynthesis and geopolymeric applications. More and more public and private research institutes and companies are working on this new chemistry for innovative solutions in adding value on industrial wastes, or solutions to emit less pollution, more careful on the environment and mankind, respecting the sustainable development and the 3 bottom line principles.

A high-tech ecological, environmentally friendly chemistry exists, we have to say it to the world!

First conference in 20 years to focus on the science behind
New Materials for the Third Millennium and
their Ancient Analogues (Roman Cement, Pyramid stone).

June 30, July 1 and 2, 1999
at INSSET, Université de Picardie, Saint-Quentin, France
Organised by the Geopolymer Institute.

(included in the Geopolymer 2005 Proceedings)

The previous European Conference on geopolymeric technologies, GEOPOLYMER ‘88 was held in 1988 at the Université de Technologie, Compiègne, France. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Geopolymer Institute, the city of Saint-Quentin, where the geopolymeric technology was invented, was dedicated to welcome the 2nd Geopolymer International Conference: GÉOPOLYMÈRE ‘99.

The last few years have seen spectacular technological progress in the development of Geosynthesis and geopolymeric applications. The remarkable achievements made through geosynthesis and geopolymerisation include mineral polymers (geopolymers), flexible ceramics which transform like plastics at low temperatures, ceramic composite made manually at room temperature or thermoset in a simple autoclave, concrete which after 4 hours has higher strength than the best currently-used concrete. Resulting from this are industrial applications which, while using ceramics as the basic material, no longer need heavy equipment and high temperatures. Geopolymers enable product designers to envisage the use of ceramic type materials with the same facility as organic polymers..

New state-of-the-art materials designed with the help of geopolymerisation reactions are opening up new applications and procedures, and transforming ideas that have been taken for granted in inorganic chemistry. This new generation of materials, whether used pure, with fillers or reinforced, is already finding applications in all fields of industry.

More than 28 international research institutions and companies involving 47 scientists and experts presented 32 papers.

The Conference focused on applications dealing with FIRE SAFETY in transportation (automotive, aerospace/aeronautic and naval industries), INFRASTRUCTURES (fire-safety in tunnels), NUCLEAR-POWER PLANTS, toxic and radioactive waste management (URANIUM WASTES), geopolymeric cementitious systems based on waste- and by-products (FLY-ASH, SLAG). It will display various applications for nonferrous foundries and metallurgy, civil engineering, and other industries, including ARTS and DECORATION.

A special day was dedicated to the applications in ARCHAEOLOGY (ceramics, cements, man made stones, pyramids, statues).
