<h3>Abstract:</h3>
<p>To determine the nature of the <i>Carbunculus</i>, we used an unexpected discovery from the GEOCISTEM program. During a meeting in Cagliari (Sardinia) in September 1996, we were able, together with the geologists, to visit the volcanic tuff quarry of Paringianu, exploited to extract ashlar. The local volcanic context is constituted by ignimbrites and rhyolites. The tuff is very indurated, i.e. it is solid. It is composed of plagioclase, potassium feldspar, pyroxene, a vitreous matrix and montmorillonite. It was sampled for analysis. During the visit, we saw a curiosity for the specialists of volcanic materials: while some tens of meters away, hard tuff was extracted, geologists showed us an unexploited area of the quarry. And with good reason: the stone had the same composition as the well indurated rock and it contained crystals of the same dimensions, but it disintegrated into sand, when we passed the nail or the finger over it. They explained to us that during the cooling of the volcanic layer, which must be done slowly for the rock to harden, a sudden degassing in this layer of tuff left columns through which the gases escaped: the stone did not have time to have a good cementing when it cooled. This showed the degree of cohesion between the two types of stone: one cooled slowly to acquire some consistency, while the degassing made the other a soft and not very indurated rock (<i>Carbunculus</i>). According to the geologists who accompanied us to the site, the difference in induration between two rocks of similar composition is a common phenomenon. By observing the degassing columns, we could see that they were vertical and that they created a small system of veins which vertically crossed the entire tuff layer from the bottom to the circulation floor. This was approximately one man&#8217;s height, and these ducts were a few centimeters wide. This phenomenon is known as &#8220;gas pipe”.</p>
<h3>Résumé:</h3>
<p>Pour déterminer la nature du<i> Carbunculus,</i> il faut se servir d’une découverte inattendue du programme GEOCISTEM. Durant une réunion à Cagliari (Sardaigne) en septembre 1996, nous avons pu, avec les géologues, visiter la carrière de tuf volcanique de Paringianu, exploitée pour en extraire de la pierre de taille. Le contexte volcanique local est constitué d’ignimbrites et de rhyolites. Le tuf est très induré, c’est-à-dire qu’il est solide. Il se compose de plagioclase, de feldspath potassique, de pyroxène, d’une matrice vitreuse et de montmorillonite. Il fut échantillonné à des fins d’analyse. Durant la visite, nous avons vu une curiosité pour les spécialistes des matériaux volcaniques: alors qu’à quelques dizaines de mètres, on extrayait du tuf dur, les géologues nous montrèrent un endroit inexploité de la carrière. Et pour cause : la pierre avait la même composition que la roche bien indurée et elle contenait des cristaux de dimensions identiques, mais elle se délitait en sable, quand on y passait l’ongle ou le doigt. Ils nous expliquèrent qu’au cours du refroidissement de la couche volcanique, qui doit se faire lentement pour que la roche durcisse, un brusque dégazage dans cette couche de tuf laissa des colonnes par lesquelles les gaz s’échappèrent : la pierre n’a pas eu le temps d’avoir une bonne cimentation en se refroidissant. Cela montrait le degré de cohésion entre les deux types de pierres : l’une l’une s’est refroidie doucement pour acquérir une certaine cohérence, tandis que le dégazage faisait de l’autre une roche tendre et peu indurée (<i>Carbunculus</i>). D’après les géologues qui nous accompagnaient sur le site, la différence d’induration entre deux roches de composition semblable est un phénomène courant. En observant les colonnes de dégazage, on pouvait voir qu’elles étaient verticales et qu’elles créaient un petit système de veines lesquelles traversaient verticalement toute la couche de tuf depuis le bas jusqu’au sol de circulation. Celle-ci faisait approximativement une hauteur d’homme, et ces conduits étaient larges de quelques centimètres. Ce phénomène est connu sous le nom de « gaz pipe ».</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Dr. Seid Koric, Technical Director for Economic and Societal Impact at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) and Research Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois teamed up with NCSA Faculty Fellow and PI, Professor Ange-Therese Akono, geopolymers expert Professor Waltraud &#8220;Trudy&#8221; Kriven and NCSA research scientist Dr. Erman Guleryuz. Their goal is to understand the impact of nanoporosity on stiffness and strength of geopolymers via molecular dynamics and finite element modeling. They set out to use finite element analysis and molecular dynamics at extreme scales to investigate the processing microstructure properties relationships in geopolymer matrix from the nanometer length scale up to the macroscopic length-scale using numerical modeling from results of multi-scale experiments using NCSA&#8217;s <a href="http://www.ncsa.illinois.edu/enabling/bluewaters">Blue Waters supercomputer</a>.</p>

<p>&#8220;We want to understand the basic behavior of the geopolymer matrix,&#8221; said Akono, &#8220;and we needed a supercomputer to carry it out and measure the response of a material from nano to macro level. Blue Waters provided great resources to bridge the gap with computing power.&#8221;</p>
<p>They used Blue Waters to produce a 3D framework that can be used to design strong geopolymer composites with a wide range of application including advanced ceramics, fire- and corrosion-resistant coatings and thermal barrier coatings, low-emitting materials…</p>

<img decoding="async" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1147" src="//www.geopolymer.org/wp-content/uploads/GPCamp-2011-8.jpg" alt="GPCamp 2011-8" width="153" height="204" />The talk shows how the development of the geopolymer science concept was governed by the need to solve global technological problems in the industrial fields of extractive minerals, ceramics, cements, building materials, decorative stones and restoration works, fire and heat resistant composites, high-tech composites for aerospace, aircraft, naval and automobile, radioactive and toxic waste containment, thermal insulation.  It further provides a clear distinction between geopolymer and alkali-activated materials and highlights some historical milestones.  Upon completion of this presentation, you will be able to make a clear cut between geopolymer technologies and low-tech/alkali-activated systems.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Hybrid organic-geopolymer materials</strong></p>
<p>A recent scientific paper describes Novel hybrid organic–geopolymer materials prepared through an innovative synthetic approach based on a co-reticulation in mild conditions of epoxy based organic resins and an MK-750-based geopolymer inorganic matrix.<br />
        A high compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases, even at appreciable concentration of resin, was realized up to micrometric level. The new synthetic approach is based on the incorporation of the organic resin to the geopolymeric matrix suspension when both polymerization reactions are not yet completed. On gets good compatibility between the organic and the aqueous inorganic phases thanks to the numerous hydroxyl tails formed during the epoxy ring opening reaction that make the organic phase “temporarily hydrophilic” increasing the compatibility with the aqueous inorganic phase.<br />
        These new hybrid organic-geopolymer materials present significantly enhanced properties. This research is carried out at  Dipartimento per le Tecnologie – Facoltà di Ingegneria, Università di Napoli ‘Parthenope’ with the collaboration of Depart. of Chemistry, University Frederico II, Napoli.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since the beginning of his research, many &#8220;experts&#8221; suggested to J. Davidovits to carry out paleomagnetism studies. Indeed at the time of their solidification, the stones absorb the local magnetic field, in intensity and direction. The direction of this field varies with the ages. If the blocks of the pyramid have different magnetic orientations, it would be because they were assembled in a random manner, after having been extracted from the quarries, then cut. On the other hand, if the blocks have the same south-north magnetic orientation, this would prove that solidification took place at their current location, at an extremely recent geological age. So these blocks would have been made manually by humans, on the spot.</p>
<p>It was obvious that this type of test would provide favorable or unfavorable answers. However, as with all other analyzes, J. Davidovits felt that he should not do them himself. He therefore waited for geological physicists specialized in this discipline to grasp the question for themselves and undertake an experiment. It took a long time, because none of the &#8220;experts&#8221; at the outset wanted, or could not, undertake this study. Advisers are never the payers. This is true here. This was done in 2012 with the scientyific publication by Túnyi and El-Hemaly in the international scientific journal <em> Europhysics News </em>, under the title <em> Paleomagnetic investigation of the Pyramids </em>. These two geophysicists made a paleomagnetic study of the stones of the pyramids of Cheops and Khephren to determine whether the theory of artificial geopolymer limestone was valid or not. <p>They had read, 3 years ago, in this same journal, an article written by Guy Demortier, himself a member of the European Physical Society. His article was entitled &#8220;Revisiting the Construction of Egyptian Pyramids&#8221;, <em> Europhysic News </em>, 40/7, 07. Igor Túnyi is a geophysicist and paleomagnetist at the Geophysical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovakia (he died recently after a long illness). Ibrahim A. El-hemaly is a geophysicist at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, in Cairo. They took samples from Cheops and Khephren and other samples were taken from the quarries of Mokattan and Helwan, for comparison. The figure shows the location of the samples. As the article did not contain photos, J. Davidovits linked these sampling sites with photographs taken from his collection.</p>

<p>Nr 1: south-eastern corner of Khephren; it corresponds to the huge individual blocks of the base.<br />
Nr 2: southwest corner; individual block identical to those located above the terraces, on the 6th step.<br />
Nr 3: one of the 5 terraces cut in the geological layer.<br />
Nr 4: sample taken from the front of the trench of the geological layer.<br />
Nr 5: individual block identical to the blocks of Cheops, but on the east side.<br />
Nr 6: to the east, south side, individual block (no photo).<br />
Nr 7: to the south, east side, rest of the geological limestone substratum (no photo).</p>
<p>The samples Nr 3, Nr 4 and Nr 7 are assigned to a geological limestone dating from the Eocene (30 million years). The picture shows that samples Nr 1, Nr 2, and Nr 5 have magnetic polarization in the south-north direction. Therefore, these samples are artificial (man-made). Block Nr 6 is not clearly defined. It could be an individual block of geopolymer limestone that has been moved. It shows an orientation opposite to that of sample Nr 5, namely a rotation along the north-south axis.</p>
<p>In his book &#8220;<em>Why the Pharaohs built the Pyramids with Fake Stones</em>&#8220;, Professor Davidovits has clearly shown the location of the natural limestone blocks and terraces (see essentially the <em>Circuit of the Pyramid Plateau at Giza, Egypt</em>, pages 233-262). For example, we know that in the pyramid of Khefren, more than a quarter of the volume of the pyramid is natural stone, namely the terraces carved in the inclined limestone plateau and which constitute the first 5 layers of the pyramid. At the January 2009 Daytona Beach conference, Professor Joseph Davidovits (Geopolymer Institute, France) and Professor Waltraud Kriven (University of Illinois, USA) agreed to organize two official complementary and different conferences, every year:<br />
&#8211; one located in the USA , in January, at Daytona Beach, Florida,  Geopolymer Symposium within the Frame of the ICACC International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites. This is a regular conference for scientists.<br />
&#8211; the second in Europe, in July, in Saint-Quentin, France, the GeopolymerCamp: it is a gathering, a workshop, not a traditional conference.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Several geopolymer scientists asked me to make available for free download in the LIBRARY, my first paper presented at the <em>IUPAC Symposium on Long-Term Properties of Polymers and Polymeric Materials</em>. This symposium held in Stockholm, Sweden, Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 1976, had a session Topic III dedicated to New Polymers of High-Stability. I had asked Professor Herman Mark from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, New York, President of this IUPAC Symposium, to outline the potential of this new mineral polymer research. Prof. H. Mark was a world famous polymer scientist and he encouraged me to implement this new field of polymer chemistry targeted at developing high-temperature and fire resistant polymers.Three years later, I created the Geopolymer Institute and coined the generic term &#8220;geopolymer&#8221;.<br /> In the LIBRARY, it is paper <a href="//www.geopolymer.org/library/technical-papers/20-milestone-paper-iupac-76"><em># 20 Milestone paper IUPAC 1976</em></a>.</p>

<p>The abstract reads: &#8220;A comparison was made of the solid-state 29Si, 27Al and 43Ca MAS NMR spectra of the outer casing stone from Snefru&#8217;s Bent Pyramid in Dahshour, Egypt, with two quarry limestones from the area. The NMR results suggest that the casing stones consist of limestone grains from the Tura quarry, cemented with an amorphous calcium-silicate gel formed by human intervention, by the addition of extra silica, possibly diatomaceous earth, from the Fayium area.&#8221;</p>
